Giving up Fashion for God?

No matter how many times I re-read the story of the crucifixion, taking in the same words every time, I always walk away from it learning something completely new. This time around, I became fixated on the words Jesus spoke from His arrest to His death. As a writer, I know how much words can speak to someone, especially ones that are going to hold so much meaning throughout history (which Jesus knew even then how much His words would mean to many generations of people).

The last words Jesus said before His death on the cross were, "It is finished."

For some reason, these words reminded me of the first words He spoke to His followers in the beginning of the book of John. The first thing Jesus asked in that book was, "What are you seeking?" Although these two phrases are in different contexts, I think they have a lot in common.

Look at the story of Nicodemus, for example. A man of the Phraises and a ruler of the Jews, Nicodemus had a place of power. However, after his approach to Jesus in the night in John 3:1-14, he knew Jesus was sent by God.

This is not the moment that truly moved me about Nicodemus though. It was after the crucifixion when he brought about seventy-five pounds of myrrh and aloes to be buried with Jesus. He assisted Joseph, wrapping Jesus in the linen cloths and spices. Instead of seeking the power he had in his position, Nicodemus knew that burying Jesus meant more.

Now, I need to admit something; do you mind if I get a little vulnerable with you?

I find a lot of my identity in fashion. Although I know my identity is in Christ, I care a lot about my apperance. It is not so much about being better than people fashionably, or craving compliments from friends. I just really love wearing pretty things, and blogging about them! I guess in that sense you could say I seek being fashionable... I seek these material things.

Adulterers and adulteresses! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Whoever therefore wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God. -James 4:4

I think what hit me so hard about Nicodemus is that despite the power in his position as a ruler, or the valuables he possessed, he sacrificed a lot that day by assisting with Jesus' burial.

If I had to, would I give up my jewels, purses, or shoes if it meant following Jesus?

The answer is YES. Jesus asked His disciples, and now He's asking you: "What are you seeking?" He also tells us, "It is finished."

I may seek a fashionable lifestyle, but I know that Jesus defeated every sin for us, which means I am free of whatever sin once had a hold on me. Each day I thank God for the clothes I wear. As I continue to seek Jesus, I have realized how much more willing I am to giving up my fashionable clothes, or other special possessions in my life, if it means following Him.

Don't let something of this world act as a distraction - or keep you away - from the gates of Heaven. Seek Him and leave all else in this world. He is all you need.

You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength. -Deuteronomy 6:5

What is it that you are seeking? Because it is finished, and it no longer has a hold on you.
