Psalm 128 Man
For years now, perhaps since the existence of Tirzah Mag, I’ve sought out the male counterpart of Proverbs 31. Starting at a young age, women are taught to become the Proverbs 31 woman. Men are taught to find a wife who embodies the Proverbs 31 woman. One of the most common questions we’ve got here at Tirzah, however, is what does a male version of Proverbs 31 look like?
While reading my Bible reading the other day, I stumbled upon Psalm 128. As soon as I read it, I now knew I found a great Biblical example of the Godly man.
Blessed are all who fear in the LORD,
Who walk in obedience to Him.
You will eat the fruit of your labor;
Blessings and prosperity will be yours.
Your wife will be like a fruitful vine
Within your house;
Your children will be like olive shoots
Around your table.
Yes, this will be the blessing
For the man who fears the LORD.
May the LORD bless you from Zion;
May you see the prosperity of Jerusalem
All the days of your life.
May you live to see your children’s children
Peace be on Israel.
-Psalm 128
Our founder and friend, Yelena Sheremeta has been doing a marriage challenge over on her dating/marriage blog with her spouse. One of the challenges for a week was finding Scripture to pray over your current marriage or future marriage. This became the verse I utilized for that challenge.
First, the qualities of a man who is yet to be a husband or one who already is. As the beginning verses state, look for the men who fear the LORD and walk in obedience to Him. You will know this by their fruit. Are they following Scripture? Is there clear evidence of the fruits of the Spirit in their life (see Galatians 5). They should be eating the fruits of their labor as well. Are they doing any work or is life plagued by consequences of wrong work?
Next, we actually see that a Godly man produces fruit in his own marriage. It says that when a man is following those beginning verses of walking in fear of the LORD and obedience, his wife will be a fruitful vine in the home. She will become even more of the Proverbs 31 life. His obedience to the LORD will result in her obedience to the LORD and more fruit. Then, that will spill over into their home. The man’s act of obedience will bear fruit across his entire home.
The Scripture goes on to pray blessing over that man. A blessing to see the prosperity that spills into generations of blessing. His name and His inheritance will spill forth into generations. In a marriage, family, and home that is following Biblical order - a man produces much fruit. We spend a lot of time talking about Proverbs 31 - but let’s also pray about finding spouses or encouraging our spouses to be the Psalm 128 man.
Every man is different - just like every woman is. However, this Scripture is a Biblical example to follow for either a single man or married man to follow. And, if you’re not married, look at the man your considering. Is he a Psalm 128 man? In addition, check out these articles we wrote about Biblical manhood:
