Meditate on God

Today I want to talk to you about Bible study/meditation. I'm not talking about meditation like the world sees it. I'm talking about more Biblical meditation, which means engaging with Scripture through reading, memorization, or contemplation.

Biblical meditation is thinking deeply about God, His word, and His works- not emptying your mind but filling it with truth.  We can make the definition simpler: slowing down, focusing your mind on God, and letting His Word shape your heart and life. This spiritual discipline leads to deeper faith, peace, and wisdom.

"Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.”

--Philippians 4:8

This verse encourages thinking on things that are true, noble, right, pure, lovely, commendable, and excellent, highlighting the importance of focusing the mind on positive and God-honoring thoughts. Meaning we must think about things of God. Also, we are humans, we will struggle with thinking about untrue things, at least for me, I get in a thought spiral and think about ungodly things.

“But whose delight is in the law of the LORD, and who meditates on his law day and night.”

-Psalm 1:2

This is saying the Lord is delighted when we spend time with Him. We can meditate on Scripture day and night, anytime, anywhere, just as we can pray anytime, anywhere. It also describes the mindset and behavior of a righteous person, the one who chooses God's path over worldly things. His delight in the law of the lord refers broadly to God's instruction, his word, teaching, and commandments, not just rules. To delight in it means the person genuinely enjoys, values, and finds satisfaction in learning and living by the Lord's will. And meditate day and night. Meditation here doesn't mean passive or empty reflection but rather active engagement, pondering, studying, and internalizing God's Word consistently day and night, emphasizing a continual practice and showing dedication and a lifestyle built around God's truth.

“May my meditation be pleasing to Him, for I rejoice in the lord.”

-Psalm 104:34

God is pleased when we meditate in His Word, and we rejoice because we are getting to know him more and more. This Psalm is a personal declaration of worship, joy, and spiritual intimacy with God. The psalmist is saying that thinking about God’s nature, works, and goodness is a pleasant, comforting, and joyful experience. Meditation here means deep reflection or contemplation, and it's focused on who God is.

“Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer.”

-Psalm 19:14

Breaking it down, let the word of my mouth… like the thoughts inside. Be acceptable in your sight… meaning be pleasing to your lord. And rock and redeemer meaning God. The writer is asking God to help him stay pure and honest not just on the outside (words) but on the inside to (his thoughts). He is recognizing that God is both his protector and the one who saves him.

Honestly, there are so many scriptures that talk about so many things, including meditation, I could go on, but that's a lot of words to type. In conclusion to this article, we all should be meditating on His Word, it's a spiritual discipline. It brings peace and clarity if we reflect on God's promises, and it brings comfort, especially in hard times. Regular meditation reshapes how you think, live, and aligns you with God's truth.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, I thank you for this spiritual discipline. I pray you help us always draw closer to You, and help us slow down. The world moves fast, help us slow down and reflect on your word and your truth, Lord. Your truth brings peace and clarity. Shape our hearts and minds to be more like you, Jesus.

In Jesus' name,

Amen.
