Miracles Healing from Coma

Guest contributor: Salomina Thomas

As usual, my week was spent at home, cooking, cleaning, and attending physiotherapy appointments. However, I began to experience increased physical pain due to Rheumatoid Arthritis and Fibromyalgia. My walking started to slow down, and I suspected that my chronic conditions had severely flared up. Concerned, I booked appointments with both my specialist and my GP. In the meantime, I developed abdominal pain. My GP provided a standby letter for admission to the Emergency Department. Subsequent blood tests returned abnormal results, and as my symptoms worsened, my husband took me to the Emergency Department. I was admitted to the general ward for severe abdominal pain, where the doctors recommended a blood transfusion and kept me under observation for a week.

During my hospital stay, the doctors were initially unable to determine the cause of my symptoms; I continued to lose fluids without explanation. Later, my condition worsened dramatically, and I found myself struggling to breathe. The night nurse quickly called the doctor, and both the senior nurse and doctor decided I needed to be transferred to the ICU immediately, where I was given high-intensity oxygen. It was there that they diagnosed Vasculitis, a condition that can rupture internal organs. I received infusions for Vasculitis and antibiotics, but due to the late diagnosis, my body could not cope, and I eventually slipped into a coma. Weeks passed with no signs of recovery. The doctors in the ICU considered me brain dead and gave my husband and children 24 hours, advising them to prepare for my funeral.

My husband pleaded with the hospital for more time and reached out to our church pastor, Bible study friends, and family for prayer. The pastor brought holy oil and prayed for my family and me, visiting every week. My Bible study friends also came to the ward, praying for God’s healing and sharing hopeful Bible verses, reminding us to trust God for complete healing.

"For where two or three gather together as my followers, I am there among them."

-Matthew 18:20

My husband started to play worship songs and kept near my ears to see if I would respond. The next day, when he played the songs, my husband noticed my eyes moving. He immediately informed the Doctor that I have responded to songs and that they need to keep the life support on for a couple of days for full recovery. God has answered all the prayers and slowly brought me alive. I started to open my eyes; however, I noticed my body was covered with tubes and machines.

God gave me the strength to call him for help. In my mind, I called Jesus to breathe life for me. I have read Isaiah 42:5 several times. He gives breath to everyone, life to everyone who walk the earth. My lungs have failed the capacity to breathe, but by applying the scripture and trusting Jesus to breathe for me, and prayers enabled me to breathe. Slowly, I started to become stable. As we can’t see the oxygen, but feel the oxygen going inside our body. In the same way, I felt Jesus as oxygen to heal. Jesus and oxygen are important for our lives. The ICU department was surprised that I came alive, and after 3 weeks in ICU, they moved me to a ward, and they diagnosed me with kidney failure.

My primary school friend wrote a scripture verse, suggesting prayer and she is using this verse to pray for me.

“I will not die ; instead, I will live to tell what the Lord has done.

-Psalm 118:17

I read this bible verse everyday and asked God what his plan was for me. My lungs and heart are functioning at a low level and I am still on oxygen. I have lost the ability of swallowing fluid and solid food, lost total mobility and strength. I asked my friend what is the use of living in this condition. She reassured me that God will bring me out of this . Every day I listen to the word of God that my sisters in Christ send me. I read the scripture and listen to worship songs. I prayed to Jesus, “God, you brought me out of Coma , bring me out of this, and remove all the tubes from me and discharge me”.

My friend reinforced the story of Jesus healing a paralyzed man in Luke 5. How his friends lowered him down to see Jesus to be healed. I was mentally and physically worn out, but my friends' faith enabled me to regain my faith in my darkest moment. Jesus responded to other friends' faith and their prayers and healed me. As Christians, we have opportunities to bring each one of us to the living Christ.

I stayed in the hospital for 3 months and slowly gained the strength to be discharged. Many times in my life, I have experienced the importance of engaging with those who are faithful in prayer. Through the power of corporate prayer, my family and I experienced God’s divine intervention. In my deepest sleep of coma, God didn’t sleep; he was my strength in my weakness.
