Emotions
In July, we will be discussing difficult emotions. Emotions are a tricky thing to deal with. If you would like to read Jennie Allan's book Entangling Your Emotions. I did a study with Alycia and some other ladies last summer on it. The Biblical meaning of it is that difficult emotions are seen as a natural part of the human experience, not inherently sinful or something to be avoided. While emotions can be powerful and even overwhelming, the Bible offers guidance on how to process them in a way that honors God and leads to growth. In the book, it says we fall into the emotional trap of controlling our feelings. We cope with our feelings instead of acknowledging our feelings,
We are all guilty of falling into a trap of letting our emotions be in control all the time, at least for me, this happens. That's where we also need to surrender our emotions to God. Everyone has a hard time surrendering to God; sometimes our flesh just does not want to. Difficult emotions can be brought to God. He created us to have emotions, and the Bible tells us how to deal with those emotions. The Bible encourages believers to take their concerns and struggles to God in prayer. Philippians 4:6-7 and 1 Peter 5:7 emphasize casting your cares onto God and finding His perfect peace His peace casts out fear. This doesn't mean ignoring or suppressing emotions, but rather bringing them before God for guidance and healing.
Emotional regulation is important. The Bible encourages believers to be self-controlled and to manage their emotions in a way that honors God. This includes recognizing when emotions are leading to sin and making conscious choices to respond in a Godly manner. Learning to process emotions Biblically involves acknowledging them, bringing them to God, and seeking His wisdom in responding to them. In essence, the Bible offers a balanced perspective on difficult emotions, acknowledging their place in human experience while also guiding how to navigate them in a way that honors God and fosters spiritual growth. The Bible suggests that God can use difficult situations and emotions to refine our character and draw us closer to Him. Difficulties can lead to perseverance, maturity, and a deeper understanding of God's grace. Examples of this can be seen in the lives of Joseph, David, and Paul, who all experienced significant hardship that ultimately shaped their faith. Fun fact: Moving your body produces serotonin. Also, a connection with Jesus is so healing and also your community is big part of that. They are there for a reason. To have fun but also to pray with you and for you.
The Bible recognizes that emotions can be influenced by sin and lead to negative or destructive behaviors. Emotions can be distorted by sin and flawed thinking. Emotions can distort our perception of reality and lead us away from God's truth. It's important to examine the thoughts and beliefs that underlie our emotions and seek God's guidance in processing them.
This is some of what sculpture tells us:
"Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus".
-Philippians 4:6-7
"Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will".
-Romans 12:2
"Fools give full vent to their rage, but the wise bring calm in the end".
-Proverbs 29:11
"Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger".
-Ephesians 4:26
"But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law".
-Galatians 5:22-23
"Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light".
Matthew 11:28-30
It's okay to ask for help. God can help and He has people who can also help and there are so many more resources out there than back in the day. Living life tangled up emotionally is not really living at all.
Prayer
Lord, You know our thoughts and emotions. Help us give You the control.
Amen
