Modest is Hottest
My dad taught my sister and I that ‘modest is hottest” and we needed to dress in an honorable way. If not, there were consequences: turtlenecks and jumpers! I hate turtlenecks. I feel like something is around my neck, because something is. And jumpers scream homeschooler! I have nothing against homeschoolers. I am one of them, I just don’t want the entire world to know it!
Modest is the hottest is the mantra I use today when I am picking out an outfit. I do not want anyone to stumble, including my two brothers.
“But take care that this liberty of yours does not somehow become a stumbling block to the weak.”
-1 Corinthians 8:9
God did not give us a dress code, but He did give us guidelines in how we need to dress.
“I also want women to dress modestly, with decency and propriety…”
-1 Timothy 2:9
Decency, meaning do not flaunt what you got. I am proud of what God gave me, but not everyone needs to see it. That is only to be shared with my husband and I will keep it hidden for him. That being said you will NEVER catch me in a bikini. To me a bikini/swimsuit is like wearing your unmentionables out in public and no one would do that! Growing up I went to the beach, like everyone else,. The only difference is I went for two weeks. My grandmother said that if you went on vacation for a week, about the time you finish unpacking you have to pack back up! For two weeks out of the summer, we enjoyed time at the beach,. Those memories are some of my favorites. I have not gone to the beach in close to ten years and I’m okay with that.
I would much rather spend time in the mountains than go to the beach; I know, I know, I just don’t enjoy it. You see, I am pale; imagine Belle from Beauty and the Beast, and then you are close to my skin tone. I bet if Belle went to the beach, she, like me would wear a t-shirt over her suit. The less skin exposed, the less opportunity for sun burn.
The other parameter God gives to dress is found in 1 Corinthians 12:23,
“…and the parts that we think are less honorable we treat with special honor. And the parts that are unpresentable are treated with special modesty,”
-1 Corinthians 12:23
For me, that means a lot of T-shirts, nothing above my knee, and no blouses or dresses with low necklines. I am an adult, I could wear whatever I wanted, but I do not to honor those around me and my future husband. I have been told that I have a character that outshines others, and I think that all started with Dad telling me ‘modest is hottest’. Dressing modestly may look different to you; we all have different convictions. We need to consider what would make God smile and say, ‘That’s my daughter’ .
After all, our bodies are His temple, and they deserve respect and honor.
“Don’t you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself, for God bought you with a high price. So you must honor God with your body.”
-1 Corinthians 6:19-20
We must think of what would be honoring to both God and others when we are picking out an outfit.
Remember ‘modest is hottest’.
