Boundaries

This month I'll be writing to you about boundaries.  The definition of boundaries is a purposeful divine design that establishes order, defines responsibility, and provides protection for individuals, communities, and even nations. They are not meant to be barriers of love or relationships but rather to safeguard one's spirit and to promote healthy relationships by promoting God’s standards. Boundaries are essential for guarding one's heart.

In creation, God demonstrates the importance of boundaries by separating elements of creation by establishing order out of chaos. The 10 commandments provide moral and spiritual boundaries. The commandments give more of a clear moral framework for living by setting limits on behavior and protecting the relationship between God and his people. Boundaries can also be seen in lives of individuals such as Jesus. Jesus created personal boundaries by setting aside time to pray away from the crowds.

God establishes boundaries to create order and to protect individuals and communities from harm. Boundaries help define who we are and our responsibilities, enabling us to live autonomously within God’s design. When we set boundaries, we are honoring God.

Throughout the Bible God instructs us to live with boundaries. Proverbs 23:10-11 shows us that boundaries are also about protecting the vulnerable and not taking advantage of them:

“Do not move the ancient boundary markers that your fathers have set up. Do not encroach on the property of the defenseless."

-Proverbs 23:10-11

In 2 Corinthians 6:14, we are given a boundary on relationships. We are instructed to yoke ourselves only with someone who follows the Lord, as we do:

"Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers. For what partnership has righteousness with lawlessness? Or what fellowship has light with darkness?"

-2 Corinthians 6:14

Prayer

Lord, help us set good boundaries. We need protection in every area of our lives, Lord, and I ask for wisdom on what boundaries need to be set in my own life, to honor you.

Amen
