Book Review: Jesus, Our True Friend

If you’re like me and already have The Jesus Storybook Bible, Jesus, Our True Friend is the perfect addition to your child’s library. Both of these books are written by Sally Lloyd-Jones and illustrated by Jago. While The Jesus Storybook Bible goes over stories from the Old and New Testament and shows Jesus is the missing piece that puts the whole Bible together, Jesus, Our True Friend focuses on stories from the New Testament about God’s love and how Jesus shows us what love really is.

Every page of this book is filled with big, beautiful pictures that help even my littlest, who is 2, understand the stories better. Each story is the perfect length to hold the attention span of younger children, but also descriptive and long enough to where they can understand the message of each story. The book has seven stories from the New Testament: Jesus being true love sent to us, Jesus turning water into wine, the good Samaritan, Mary and Martha, the woman caught in sin that Jesus saves from being stoned, Jesus calming the stormy sea, and the prodigal son. All heavy, but important stories that show how loving Jesus is. The book does a wonderful job of making these heavier stories very kid-friendly and easy to grasp for little minds.

All of the stories in this book will bring you and your child joy and encouragement. The book ends with a wonderful final declaration of God’s love:

“This was his friend, his True Friend, who loved him - with a Wonderful, Never Stopping, Never Giving Up, Unbreaking, Always and Forever Love.”
