Who Are You Following: Book Review
“Then He called the crowd to him along with his disciples and said: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.” - Mark 8:34
I recently got offered a copy of Sadie Robertson Huff’s book, Who Are You Following, to review for it’s release! True confession: lots of people have told me about Sadie, but I’ve never heard a sermon by her or read any of her books previously. After reading this book, I actually plan on tuning into her podcast. If I had to recommend one book (outside of the Bible) for young adult women for 2022, it would be this book! I read it in the span of two days and was so impressed by her words.
Who Are You Following is a great example of a helpful book that points you back to Christ. Sadie used real life, practical examples and many Bible stories to show how we should utilize social media in the 21st century. I loved how she brought the point that social media is not bad - in and of itself - but how we utilize it affects our everyday life. This is a book that needed to be written as, for the first time ever, we live in a culture where you have instant access to other people’s lives around the world.
“Seek to understand people, not judge them. The most canceled person in history is the one who gave us hope for our future!” - Sadie Robertson
This quote reflects the purpose of the whole book. We live in a generation saturated with stunning statistics of eating disorders, suicide rates, and self - esteem issues. One disagreement turns into “canceling” the other person. Why? Because on social media, we can cancel another person with one button. We’ve taken our virtual problems into the real world. Sadie elaborates on this very well and talks about how Jesus navigated disagreements, being “canceled”, and building friendships. If you want to take your social media and put Jesus in the middle of it - this book will help you do so.
I want to close this brief review by suggesting you get the book to do the assessment she has at the end of it. Sadie created a brief assessment for you to evaluate why you “follow” the people and sites you do on social media. After evaluating, there is another worksheet to help you decide who you want to follow “moving forward”. If you are reading this review on Tirzah Mag, I absolutely recommend it because that means you are engaged in a virtual community. For me personally, my virtual world has been Tirzah for years. It has grown me, expanded my life, taught me more about Jesus, and given me friends from across the globe. In the right hands, technology is a beautiful/powerful tool for God’s Kingdom. If it is misused, technology is a powerful tool for the devil and to divide us all. As Sadie suggests, evaluate your use and build God’s Kingdom.
