Where I Find God

There is a song written and performed by Larry Fleet called ‘Where I Find God.’ Part of the chorus says:

“Sunday mornin' in a church pew

In a deer stand or a hay field

An interstate back to Nashville

In a Chevrolet with the windows down

Me and Him just ridin' around

Sometimes, whether I'm lookin' for Him or not

That's where I find God.”

My husband and I love this song, and while we recently traveled out west and then returned home to all the leaves changing and the cool, fall weather, I felt this song hit closer than ever.

I recently wrote an article on the importance of church, which you can find here. While I truly believe church is important and you can always meet God there, I also know we can find God anywhere, through the mundane or extraordinary. 

On our trip out west, we visited some of the national parks in Arizona, Utah, and Colorado. As we were able to stand in awe of the magnificent creations, the above song always came to my mind. While I looked out at the views, I would find God there. As we watched the sun dip below the Grand Canyon, I could hear the many languages around me, and thought how cool it was that people of different nations and cultures all came together to witness God’s majesty together. When we would drive to our next destination of our trip, we would play worship music and enjoy the scenery, and I found God there, too. 

When we returned to southern Indiana, the leaves had begun to change color and the weather was cooler. Sitting on our front porch or going for a short hike, I found and continue to find God there, too. When I am at work, and feel overwhelmed, I take a few deep breaths and say a short prayer, and guess what? God is there with me, too. When we spend time with our families, or our little nephews run and grab our legs in greeting, I find God in those moments as well. 

There are many different ways to grow your faith - increasing your prayer time, improving your study of the Bible, fellowship - but my advice to you today is to slow down. We can find God everywhere as He is always with us, we just have to invite Him in. When you feel overwhelmed or are participating in the everyday tasks of life, take a moment to find God. If you get to visit spectacular areas of the world, know God is there with you, too. Just as the song says, in a church pew, in a hayfield, in a car driving around with the windows down, you can find God there. He is patiently waiting for you.
