There's Power in Our Words
Did you know that there's power in what we say? The Bible tells us that we have power in our words when we speak life or death. The meaning of speaking life is when our words are uplifting and encouraging. When we speak death, that is like saying I'm not enough or saying something that hurts someone else. I work with a pro-life group currently and I can’t speak for others, but I can get rude people, and their words honestly can hurt.
”Set a guard over my mouth, Lord; keep watch over the door of my lips.”Psalm 141:3
We need God to help guard what we speak. We need to watch how we speak and what we say to ourselves or others. The Enemy likes it when we talk bad about ourselves or others. In my experience, when we speak death to ourselves, it leads to open doors and more room for lies to fill our mind and even heart.
”Too much talk leads to sin. Be sensible and keep your mouth shut.”Proverbs 10:19
What we say can lead to sin, if I’m saying things that aren't Godly, it may cause me to sin in my life. If I say something bad about someone, that could lead to a bitter heart or gossip, if you struggle with gossip.
“The mouth of the godly person gives wise advice, but the tongue that deceives will be cut off.”
Proverbs 10:31
This is saying that if we are Godly, our words will lead to life and encouragement to others. Just like our hearts, our words can be deceiving. At the last young adult worship night I attended, a bunch of young adults from the area got together to worship. The speaker that night talked about how there is power in what we say. I know I may not be the only one, but I struggle so much with speaking life over myself. My mind is full of things that can't be true even if it feels or seems true. Proverbs is a book of wisdom and tells us how wise words bring many benefits. When we bring wise words to others, it helps them out so much when they're looking for help and encouragement in a situation. When we speak death, it's not pleasing to the Lord. When we worship and praise God, that's speaking life. It's hard, but we have to speak life over any situation. We have to surrender our minds and words to God. If we don't, then it is an open door for the enemy to creep in and speak death and our flesh will want to give in to the lies. It's important to fight against speaking death. Speak life now so that when you’re in a difficult situation you can be confident in the wise, life giving words you have.
Prayer
Thank you, Lord, for giving us words we can speak. I ask You to help us speak life and not death. Help us to surrender our words to you even when it’s hard.
Amen
