The Biblical Way to Defeat Anxiety

This month I'm going to write about overcoming anxiety.

Anxiety can make us feel trapped, but the Bible offers a path to peace. Here are key biblical principles to defeat anxiety: It can also make us feel like it’s controlling and we let it drive us, but remember we cannot let our feelings drive us. They’re not great drivers.

  • Trade Worry for Prayer: Instead of worrying, turn your anxieties into prayers with thanksgiving, trusting that God’s peace will guard your heart and mind.

  • Focus on Today: Avoid borrowing trouble from the future. Jesus teaches us to focus on the present, knowing that God provides enough grace for today.

  • Cast Your Burdens: Actively entrust your worries to God, relying on the truth that He deeply cares for you. Overcoming anxiety is a daily choice to trust in God's peace rather than our circumstances.

  • Guard Your Mind: Replace fearful thoughts with the truth that God gives us power, love, and a sound mind.

“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”

-
Philippians 4:6-7

This passage instructs believers not to worry, but instead to bring all concerns to God through prayer and thanksgiving, promising that His peace will guard their hearts and minds.  How cool is it that we can go to a God all the time but even when we are feeling anxious he wants us to tell him why we are having anxiety.

The Bible acknowledges that anxiety and worry are common human struggles, but consistently encourages believers to turn away from fear by placing their trust, prayers, and burdens onto God. Rather than condemning anxious feelings, Scripture offers practical comfort and commands to exchange worry for divine peace.

More key themes are…

  • Cast Your Burdens: Passages like 1 Peter 5:7 tell you to throw all your worries onto God because He deeply cares for you.

  • Pray Instead of Worrying: Philippians 4:6–7 instructs you not to be anxious, but to bring every need to God through prayer with thankfulness, promising that His peace will guard your heart.

  • Focus on Today: In Matthew 6:34, Jesus advises against worrying about tomorrow, noting that each day has enough trouble of its own.

  • Acknowledge Human Struggle: Heroes of the faith in the Bible frequently felt fear and distress, but they looked to God for rescue and safety (such as David in Psalm 56:3)
