“And all this assembly shall know that the Lord saveth not with sword and spear; for the battle is the Lord's, and He will give you into our hands.”

-1 Samuel 17:47

When dealing with situations that are out of control in our lives, 'the battle belongs to the Lord’ is an apt prayer to pray. 1 Samuel 17:47 records the famous encounter between David and Goliath and serves as a vivid illustration of faith prevailing against overwhelming odds. At this juncture in Israel’s history, the Philistine giant Goliath boasted about his strength and derided the armies of Israel, instilling fear in King Saul and his men. David, then a young shepherd boy, stepped forward with a bold declaration that the battle belonged to the Lord. This moment highlights not only David's confidence in God but also the divine nature of Israel’s victories, emphasizing that physical weaponry is not what secures Israel’s victory. David's faith represents a theme throughout scripture: reliance on God rather than on human strength or tactics results in true success.

Trust in God

In this battle, David claimed that all would know that the Lord saves without the need for conventional weapons, reinforcing the belief that God is the ultimate deliverer. The verse underscores a critical principle of spiritual warfare: trust in God can empower believers to confront formidable challenges. Thus David's assertion serves as a reminder that faith must be placed in the Lord’s power rather than in human resources or understanding, as proclaimed in 1 Samuel 17:47.

Faithful Believer

Unlike all the other soldiers in King Saul’s camp, David is not afraid of the Philistine giant, but is angry that he has defied the armies of the living God. When Saul says that he is only a young man and the giant had been a warrior from his youth, David replies that he had been keeping his father’s sheep and when a bear or lion carried away his sheep, he struck the lion and bear and killed it and believes that 'Goliath' is also like these wild animals and says,

“…the Lord who rescued me from the paw of the Lion and the paw of the bear will rescue me from the hand of the Philistine.”

-1 Samuel 17:37

Goliath is unimpressed and insulted by the youth in shepherd's clothes. But David is confident that God will bring victory. He comes not as a seasoned warrior, but as a faithful believer in the name of the Lord.

Two Reasons Why David Will Win This War

  1. The first is the entire earth will know that there is a God in Israel. (1 Samuel 17:46)

  2. The second reason is that every one will know that the battles are not won by military tools or even by men (David uses a stone and a sling to kill Goliath).

How We See Our Situations

When others looked at Goliath they saw an opponent too powerful to defeat; when David looked at Goliath, he saw a target too big to miss. How unfortunate that we face our world each day on its terms and too often try to wield its weapons. God’s weapons are not as obvious, but they never fail us. Often in life when we face trials and challenges, we try to tackle the situation using our own wisdom and strength instead of surrendering them to God. Whatever our complaint or fight may be about, we should allow God to fight our battles for us. Sometimes people may treat you unfairly, insult you and belittle you, but remember we worship a God who sees and He will vindicate you. Fight your battles on your knees and you will win. When we claim promises found in the word of God and believe that God is the source of power who determines the outcome of the battle we will receive victory. When facing the Goliaths of this world, we must remember we have a name 'Jesus' who will make us win. So in all our struggles, hardships, trials and battles we can boldly say, “The battle belongs to the Lord!”.

Prayer

Dear Heavenly Father,

In moments of grief, struggle, and pain, we come before you and pray that you would take matters into your hands for the battle is not ours but the Lord’s. Let us use God-given weapons to fight our battles and not rely on our own strength.

Amen.
