Slow Down, Friends
This month I am going to write about slowing down. I think God is trying to get me to slow down a little bit. I hurt my knee at work 2 weeks ago: slipped on a wet floor and heard my knee pop. I think He’s trying to get me to slow down. I’m always go-go-go.
The Bible mentions slowing down by talking about a spiritual discipline involving intentional stillness, rest, and a shift from self-reliance to a trusting dependence on God’s timing and strength. Slowing down is hard for everyone.
“Be still, and know that I am God.”
-Psalm 46:10
“Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him; do not fret…”
-Psalm 46:10
"Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest... for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.”
-Matthew 11:28-29
Jesus frequently went to the wilderness to pray and He also told Martha to stop rushing and listen to Him. The book of James also advises being "slow to speak, slow to anger" will produce righteousness. Martha was go-go-go and Mary was just chilling by Jesus. Which wouldn't we all want to just chill with Jesus? How awesome is it that Mary got to hang with Jesus.
Jesus prioritized rest and listening: When Martha was busy with domestic tasks, Jesus gently rebuked her, saying, "Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her" (Luke 10:41-42). This shows the importance of pausing and choosing to listen over constantly being busy.
Psalm 46:10 says, "Be still, and know that I am God". This is a direct command to pause and be silent to recognize God's presence, and many see this as an example of slowing down to connect with God.
Here are some practical applications on slowing down.
Take time to rest: Just as Jesus did, take intentional breaks from your work and daily life to rest and recharge your body and soul.
Prioritize spiritual time: Make time for solitary, quiet time with God, away from distractions, to listen for His voice and receive guidance.
Respond thoughtfully: Before speaking or reacting, especially in anger or pressure, take a moment to pause and respond with grace and thoughtfulness.
Find moments of stillness: Even if you can't take a full day off, find smaller moments throughout the day to just "be still" and center yourself.
God wants us to take time to slow down and rest with Him that's easier said than done. God never intended for life to be as busy as it is. He wants us to make time for Him, even Jesus made time for Him.
