Sing A New Song Word Study

This is a WORD STUDY. You will need a journal and pen to complete it. You can do a little a day, through the week as it has been marked out. You can do it on your own or with a group of friends. The word we are going to study this week is sing. You may want to highlight the word in all the verses you read this week!

Day 1

  • Find the dictionary meaning of the word and write the word in the languages you know.

  • Write out Zephaniah 3:17 and Psalm 63:5.

  • Write them out in your own words. (This helps us understand the verse better)

  •  When my boys were babies, I used to sing them to sleep, sing over them when I was happy, and when everything felt so wonderful and right. Zephaniah 3:17 reminds me of that.

Day 2

  • How are we to sing according to these verses?

  • Have you worried about your voice or if you are carrying the tune correctly when you sing? I remind myself that God created my voice and he knows perfectly well how I sound. That helps me sing for the Lord with joy and gladness.

  • Psalm 108:1

  • Psalm 33:1

Day 3

  • Psalm 147:1 and 7

  • Psalm 149:1

  • Find 2 more verses with the word ‘sing’. Write them down.

  • Choose one verse to memorize. (You may want to draw the verse to help you remember it)

Day 4

  • What memories come to mind when you hear the word sing?

  • For me, it brings memories of my school days and the choruses we used to sing there. It reminds me of the hymns we sang each night as a family, when my parents lead the family prayer. It reminds me of Sunday school days when my sons loved to sing action songs

  • Call up a friend and share your memories. You can also write in the comments section so we can all rejoice with you.

  • Do you have special hymn books or chorus books you treasure? My father’s hard-bound large hymn book and my own read hymn book which was a gift from my grandparents on my confirmation day are very special to me.

  • When times are hard it is difficult to sing. Read this account from Acts. Acts 16: 22-34

  • What does this passage in Acts teach us?

Day 5

  • Here are a few more verses with the word ‘sing’.

  • Write notes after reading each one.

  • Psalm 96:1

  • Psalm 100:1 and 2

  • Once when our son visited from University he brought us the words ‘Thank you Lord for Your Blessings on me’. We enjoyed singing it as a family to praise the Lord. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R9gEo0_Abc4

Day 6

Read the words of this hymn and soak in the meaning. Make it your prayer. Sing it, listen to it. Highlight words that jump out at you.

“Great is Thy faithfulness!” “Great is Thy faithfulness!”
  Morning by morning new mercies I see;
All I have needed Thy hand hath provided—
“Great is Thy faithfulness,” Lord, unto me!

Pardon for sin and a peace that endured,
Thine own dear presence to cheer and to guide;
Strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow,
Blessings all mine, with ten thousand beside!

Death was once my great opponent

Fear once had a hold on me

But the Son who died to save us

Rose that we could be free indeed.

I learned that Jesus had finished and dealt with fear. I have to claim it and live it. What were some of my fears? Fear of death Psalm 2:15 Fear of man Psalm 118:6 Fear of bad news Psalm 112:7

 Let us finish with prayer.

Dear Lord

Thank you for this study about singing to praise you, from your word.

Thank you too for hymns, choruses, and praise songs written by your children in different languages around the world.

I realize Lord that at times it is easy to sing and rejoice and at other times it is hard.

Help me to live out these verses and what I have learned from them.

In Jesus name

Amen
