Shoba's Corner: Praying For Our Children

Go find John 17 in your Bible.

Here we see Jesus praying for himself, his disciples (those close to him) and then for believers around the world. When praying for his disciples Jesus prays for their protection, their sanctification and that they will be filled with joy.

Praying for protection.

Here, Jesus prays to God the Father.

“Protect them by the power of your name.”-John 17:11

“Protect them from the evil one.”-John 17:15b

When you drop your little one at school:

“Lord, protect him from all harm and danger.”

As your sweet teenager goes off on a three day youth camp: “Lord, protect her from all harm, protect her from the evil one.”

When you tuck in your precious child in bed at night: “Lord protect her.”

Our prayers will protect them from making wrong choices, to stand up against the devil’s schemes and to be strong in the Lord.

We can also pray these verses asking for God’s angels to protect our little ones.

Take time to write them down and soak in their richness.

Psalm 91:11

Psalm 34:7

Praying for a full measure of joy

“That they may have a full measure of joy within them.”-John 17:13b

When your toddler starts school, when your son is struggling to make friends at school, when your daughter is upset about her low grades at University - pray this verse. When your 1-year-old is draining you of energy and has regular screaming fits- pray for God’s joy over your house.

You can also pray these verses over your family. To write down and study further

You can use these verses.

Nehemiah 8:10

Philippians 4:4

Praying for sanctification

“Sanctify them by the truth, your word is the truth.”-John 17:17b

In this verse what is Jesus saying?

  • The Bible is true

  • When we read/study the Bible, it changes us.

When we pray this verse over our children God will give them a longing to study his word. But you as a parent have to do the needful. Pray with them and for them. Read them Bible stories, take them to Sunday School and discuss the Word at home. Let them see you soaking in the Bible.

James 5:13 tells us the importance of praying in any situation.

“Is anyone of you in trouble? He should pray. Is anyone happy? Let him sing songs of praise.”-James 5:13

As mothers let us keep praying and seeking God’s blessings on our children.
