Podcasts For The Theological Girl
I love theology. Honestly, I really love theologically sound Christians who care about what the bible actually says and not what they want it to say. I find it difficult to find media that I can follow and ingest that aligns with truth. Especially podcasts, the majority of Christian podcasts seem to focus on self-obsession, hustle culture, self-promotion, and twisting scripture to fit personal agendas. I always feel nervous turning on a “Christian” podcast because I’m not sure what “truth” they are choosing to preach.
I reached out to other girl friends of mine who I know also love theology and love podcasts. They gave me some great recommendations and helped me find some reliable podcasters I could turn on, and soak in some actually Jesus truth.
Here’s a few of my favorites:
1. Confessions of a Crappy Christian
Don’t let the title sway you, she may be a little “crunchy” (as she calls herself), but Blake brings some really honest, biblically grounded thoughts on how it looks to live for Jesus practically and realistically. She is anti-hustle culture, and speaks a lot about what it means to work hard, but also to rest in the fulfilled life He has already purchased for us. I think she brings that influence to social media that Christian women actually need, she won’t fluff it up, and she’s not afraid to get deep and technical about scripture.
2. Secret Church
Actually based on the annual event Secret Church hosted by Pastor David Platt, Secret Church podcast breaks down his extremely long marathon sermon into shorter and specific segments. I love this podcast for when I need a fifteen minute reminder on Buddhism and the best ways for Christians to reach them with the gospel, or how we should respond to politics, or what the book of Malachi is about. This podcast has been a source of encouragement for me, and always leaves me desiring to dig into scripture and learn more. Pastor David Platt does a great job of backing his sermons with contextually accurate scripture, and you can tell he’s done quite a bit of research while preparing his notes.
3. Thirty Minutes with the Perrys
I was not familiar with Jackie Hill Perry until American Gospel: In Christ Alone came out on Netflix. She is a rapper, spoken word composer, and author of Gay Girl, Good God. She shares her story of how she was a lesbian who became a Christian and is now married to a man. She and her husband run this podcast, and I love listening to how grounded they are into scripture. They have really open dialogues about marriage, temptation, family life, and their testimonies. It’s really powerful to hear their personal stories of redemption, and their journeys to where they are now. I think another thing that sticks with me about their show is that they aren’t afraid to discuss the really hard things. They always bring it back to how Jesus enters into the hard things, and what the bible has to say about it.
4. Theology Gals
Coleen, Ashley, and Angela sit down to discuss theology, and questions Christian women face every day. I haven’t personally listened as much to these, but our Editor-In-Chief is a big fan and I know they do a great job presenting tough topics of faith for those of us who have secretly been wanting to ask.
“So then, dear friends, since you are looking forward to this, make every effort to be found spotless, blameless and at peace with him. Bear in mind that our Lord’s patience means salvation, just as our dear brother Paul also wrote you with the wisdom that God gave him. He writes the same way in all his letters, speaking in them of these matters. His letters contain some things that are hard to understand, which ignorant and unstable people distort, as they do the other Scriptures, to their own destruction. Therefore, dear friends, since you have been forewarned, be on your guard so that you may not be carried away by the error of the lawless and fall from your secure position. But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and forever! Amen.”- 2 Peter 3:14-18
One of the hardest things I had to accept about studying theology was it’s difficulty. It’s a lot to process sometimes, and it would be easy to simply water it down or accept what many “Christian” influencers label as the truth without checking for myself. But we are called to wrestle, we are instructed to struggle through, to seek to understand, and to discuss with other believers about our faith. I love all of these podcast because they wrestle through faith with the same end goal of knowing Jesus more intimately and following him more accurately. The goal is not perfection, and these podcasters would all be quick to admit their own mistakes and failings, but instead, we are like children trying to understand the ways of our Father, we are the bride seeking to know the heart of her husband, sheep learning the voice of the shepherd. It’s important to weigh into balance those you are bringing into your sphere of influence, especially if you intend to listen to them mindlessly in the car.
What are you taking in? What Jesus are you being preached? The Jesus of that influencer? Or the Jesus of Nazareth, our Messiah? What gospel are you being fed?
