On Taylor Swift & Marriage

In case you missed the posts, the news, and everyone talking about it - Taylor Swift got married. The thing is how controversial her getting married can be.

As Christians, we like to debate things. Should we celebrate someone who doesn’t share Biblical values getting married? Have you heard the lyrics of her songs? Will her marriage last? I could keep going on. There are so many thoughts we all have.

The reality is Taylor Swift does identify as a Christian. She has stated that in the past. Do her actions show the life of someone who has followed Christ? No. Sex before marriage is a direct violation of God’s commands. Supporting abortion is also a direct violation of God’s commands. Standing up for gay people to get married, a covenant that was instituted by God, is also against God’s commands.

However, I’m also not going to pretend that Taylor Swift is going to read this article. I’m not going to spend time debating whether or not marriage is valid or deserves to happen if you don’t follow God’s commands. The reality is that, sometimes, we have to decide if a conversation is worth having. Taylor Swift is a real person with real feelings.

While watching her very long documentaries and live concerts, I learned quite a bit about who she was.I learned that she quit weighing herself or even looking at pictures posted of her (not sure if this is something she still does) because so many people were commenting on their different perspectives of her. I’ve learned that one of the smartest decisions she made was to turn off the ability to make comments on her Instagram post. Maybe more of us should try this?

I also learned she is one of the most hard - working and dedicated people I’ve ever seen. My prayer is that I have that kind of discipline and gratitude in the things God has called me to do. She is an amazing boss and works harder than her employees. Multiple employees talked about the love and care she had for them. Taylor truly does seem to care about her fans. She tries to create an environment where a girl can be as girly as they want. There’s so much glitter, shimmer, and sparkle in her performances. An art that is lost today.

Another art that is lost today - masculinity, femininity, and the value of a woman. While laying aside the issue of sex before marriage (which is a sin), I observed that Taylor Swift pursued her dreams. She didn’t pursue a man. She didn’t become someone who hated all men or laid aside her desire for marriage. Instead, she waited to marry the man who accepted her and all her dreams. That is an art that is also lost today.

Travis showed up because he talked on his podcast about how Taylor didn’t have time to meet him, so he could give her a friendship bracelet with her number. She wasn’t readily available because she was pursuing the dreams she had. It caught her attention that a man was willing to come into her world to meet her. He continually pursued her. Travis even went as far as to dress up and be a part of her concert. He also didn’t give up his identity. They stepped into each other’s worlds - with him leading the way. She has more power than most people in the world - and she gave him room to be a man and lead. He held the door and protected her - even though she had bodyguards for that. That is a woman who knows her worth.

We can all find reasons people can do better in life. For me, personally, this level of intentionality, pursuit, and merging of lives has been beautiful to watch unfold. A man and woman secure in who they are choosing to come together for life. If you are a single female, follow the example of pursuing the dreams God put on your heart. Allow the right man to lead and pursue you. Merge your lives in a way that sacrifices one another - but also values who God created you to be as individuals.

Most importantly, next time you want to be a part of the gossip or reasons that Taylor Swift should be critiqued, remember that she is a child of God. Pray for her. Pray that God would bless the marriage, bless their lives, and turn her life into a surrender to Him life. Imagine what would happen if she allowed God to transform every area of her life.
