May 2026: To Those Who Serve
When you think of May, you think of flowers and spring…or maybe you think of “April showers, bring May flowers.” There is a whole group of people here in the United States that think of another thing - Memorial Day. A holiday that honors those who died that served in our military.
For me, this day holds special memories. My father was in the military. He served in the United States Army - and over in South Korea when I was a little baby.
Three of my grandfathers served in the military, as well.
The man I chose to adopt as my little brother served in the military.
Each of these men brought a unique perspective into my world. I’ve learned so much about the trauma serving brings. I’ve watched the anger in a man from the horrors of war he has witnessed. The sadness in a family who wants to see joyful memories for those men that served.
During the loss of my brother, I witnessed the brotherhood of those who serve in our military. When he passed, I saw a whole group of men surrounding me. I met men with code names they used from their military days. I’ve still gotten updates on their lives - because they want their brother’s sister to know his influence on them. It’s an incredibly special world.
That bond comes from unspeakable trauma. It’s also a bond that comes from serving others together. Those men are all men that did the best with the tools they had been given to serve others. When I think of Memorial Day and the men and women who serve, I think of:
“Greater love hath no man than this - that He lay down his life for his friends.”
- John 15:13
True sacrifice is choosing to do the hard thing. It’s choosing to serve others when we want to serve ourselves. Choosing to literally throw yourself in front of a bullet so that someone else can live. That’s what the military is supposed to be about.
So, when you have a hard day this month - remember the sacrifice of our military. Think of the service that they demonstrate to others. Is there something you can do to serve someone else? What sacrifice can you make for your family? Let’s be those who serve others in the name of Jesus.
