Creation and Science, a Match Made in Heaven?

Creation and Science, a Match Made in Heaven via Tirzah MagazineLast summer, I spent every waking minute surrounded by scientists and intellectuals, many of who did not believe in God (I participated in an internship at a Big Ten university that studies yeast genetics). As I talked to them about their daily lives, I found that many believe there is a brick wall between science and creation, that the two worlds do not twist and intertwine, that there is no evidence that a higher being could have a say in the lives we are living.

As a Christian, I know that many people who believe in creation stay away from science as much as they can, maybe because science does not seem to have anything that coincides with the Bible. Many people do not think science and God are harmonious with each other because they say there is nothing blatantly obvious that proves there is a connection.

A verse in the book of Romans challenges these biases though:

“For ever since the WORLD was created, people have seen the earth and sky. Through everything God made, they can clearly SEE His invisible qualities -- His eternal power and divine nature. So they have no excuse for not knowing God.” -Romans 1:20

This verse states that we can clearly see God's invisible qualities. This means there is something on this planet that should be an obvious sign to God’s creation that He made the world, everything on it, and us in it. So…where is this flashing billboard?

According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, the definition for “science” is: knowledge about or study of the natural WORLD based on facts learned through experiments and OBSERVATION.

Read that verse in Romans again, and then combine it with the Merriam-Webster’s definition...

I don’t know about you, but I think God made science as a way for His creation (us) to see His signs in everything He created. He is showing us through science His fingerprints that we are supposed to clearly see and admire. But why can’t we see them sometimes? Where are they and where are they hiding? I do not have all of the answers to these questions, but I do have knowledge of one of God’s little clues He left for us.

While reading a book that describes the cell cycle in vivid detail, I came across a protein called Lamina. This reminded me of a YouTube video that some of you may have watched about Laminin, so I decided to do a little bit of side research on my own to distinguish the two in my mind. Laminin is a protein that is a part of a network foundation for most cells and organs. Similarly, as Christians, we put Christ at the center of our lives and He becomes our foundation - we just cannot function without leaning on Him.

“For no one can lay any foundation other than the one we already have — Jesus Christ.” -1 Corinthians 3:11

Just like a house or a skyscraper would topple without a sturdy foundation, Laminin is in us acting as the stable foundation for our bodies.

Why is foundation all of a sudden an occurring theme?

A reminder that science and creationism go hand in handWell you see, the little piece of this puzzle that just fits it all together is this: Laminin is shaped like a cross. A cross, the wooden planks that our Savior was sacrificed on; a cross, like the ones some of us wear around our necks; a cross, a constant reminder and the worldly known symbol for Christianity.

This is one of those flashing billboards! One of the “I MADE THIS!” signs from God that science and Himself form a melody. He created the major protein that is vital to our existence in the shape of a cross, advertently reminding us how He is the foundation in our lives.

A harmonious relationship between our Creator, the creation, and us is essential because our connection with God grows so much deeper if we recognize and admire the little clues He left for us.

Just like studying for an exam, you have to really understand the major concepts - like the themes of what a relationship with our Creator is like. But to get an even better grade on that exam, you have to know a lot of little details about how to work out each problem, kind of like finding the details God left for us on this Earth.

Next time you go outside, take the time to enjoy God’s creation.

Don't just worry about rushing off to class in the morning! I urge you to pray that God will open your eyes to see some of the other clues He left for us through His creations. His clues are everywhere, you might be surprised at what you find!
