Confession The Musical: A Movie Review
Three hours watching a low - budget live play with very little prop settings. First off, I do have to say it is a movie about Amish people, so would you expect a lot of props & make - up for example? I know this review started off with preparation for a “that was horrible & this was the worst”. For me though, I surprised myself and watched the whole thing and found myself enjoying it. Many times we look for the whole fireworks - flashing lights, bright sets, and when watching a movie - changing scenery.
The way this musical was done is really creative actually. It’s a reminder that the simpler things are beautiful. While the Amish may not be theologically correct, they do have an appreciation for the simpler things in life - building community, growing family, and appreciating what God has put in front of you. That was the theme throughout the whole story.
That was also what made the story worthwhile. It was a story following the journey of a young woman finding identity (what we are passionate about here at Tirzah) after discovering her religion couldn’t save her, the family she was in wasn’t what she thought, and even the relationship she’d found in was lost for a season. The plot continued to thicken and keep you intrigued.
On a personal note, if you grew up as a Christian fiction fanatic you’ll appreciate this movie. It is based off of a Beverly Lewis book and has both the familiar faces of Chonda Pierce and John Schneider. In addition to that, I appreciated seeing live theatre. If you are someone who enjoys going to a live play or musical, you may find that piece of the movie enjoyable.
To summarize - go see the musical in theatres on February 20th if you wish to spend that much on this particular movie. Personally, I would wait for the dvd because you can make the musical a little shorter and skip the 15 minute intermission in the middle of it.
