What is a Woman Worth?
Recently, there was a controversial law that caused an uproar here in the United States. The Supreme Court decided to continue allowing “birthright citizenship”, which would allow a child of someone out of the country to have United States citizenship. Apparently, this bothers many people who identify under the words “conservative Christian”. It is a political affiliation, in America, that believes their views are the only Christian way to vote or act.
Over time, I have become very confused at what Bible they are reading. While I can see frustration over this law (not stating my opinion for or against it, do your own research and make an informed decision), the reaction has been extreme. There have been countless men and women attacking a Supreme Court Justice Amy Coney Barrett. I wanted to point out the hypocrisy and unBiblical actions of these individuals.
When Supreme Court Justice Barrett was sworn in, she was instrumental in the passing of Dobbs. This was the law that allowed Roe v Wade to be overturned. She was key to multiple states being able to make abortion illegal. Abortion being the killing of innocent lives (if you have had an abortion, this is not an attempt to condemn - God is a gracious God and there is help available for post - abortive counseling). The Bible makes it very clear that killing a life is a sin. The Ten Commandments literally outline “Thou Shall Not Kill”. On the day Dobbs happened, conservative Christians everywhere heralded Barrett and how a woman helped change the law.
The conservative Christian quickly showed how fickle people can be with the recent birthright citizenship law. When the law passed, suddenly I began seeing Facebook and media posts centralized on one thing. Supreme Court Justice Barrett was a woman and if women weren’t justices, the world would be a better place. Maybe it was just the algorithm - and I am sure that not every conservative Christian agrees with this stance. The amount of people in posts and comments reiterating this were disturbing. In one instant, the woman who was celebrated became the mortal enemy.
I have done my research and cannot understand, Biblically, how any of these arguments go back to God or the Bible. The actions she did with Dobbs literally helped save babies and reverse the violation of Biblical commandments. While I can see why people may not like the birthright law, nothing within it has to do with Biblical law or commands. Although, I am sure people will try to make some correlations. Simply because people were dissatisfied with the results of Barrett’s vote, they turned on her.
That is not the problem though. The turning was extreme. I have read posts stating the world would be a better place if women stayed at home and were not judges. If you haven’t read the Bible, one of the most prominent judges in the Bible was named Deborah - and she was heralded for the amazing things she did. In addition to questioning women working and being judges, I read about an extreme man who is trying to say that Christian women shouldn’t vote - and leave voting to their husband. If I kept going through the crazy things I read over a vote, I would be writing all day.
The sad thing is there are both men and women that believe this. I want to clarify what God DOES say about women. He says they are fearfully and wonderfully made, created by Him in advance to do great things. Nowhere in the Bible does it say those things are related to being a wife or mother. There are wonderful things the Bible says about being a wife and mother. It says to be fruitful and multiply in Genesis. The Bible does say submit to your HUSBAND (not every man) in Ephesians. It also says that a man must love his wife and be willing to literally die for her. The Bible says women are created to be help mates. If you are single - that is to God, not to every man you meet. In Proverbs 31, we read all about a woman who is married, tends the land, raises kids, and is a part of her community. The Bible says women are worth so much - and called to things because of who they are and not who they are in relationship with (although this does play a significant piece of our life in every season, whether single or married).
Lastly, I want to say the Bible never says women were called to be stay at home moms, not be part of advocating for justice, or submitting to every man they meet. There is a trend in the modern conservative movement that elevates the woman who stays at home with their kids as the epitome of Godliness. I did have a stay at home mom - but it’s not a Biblical requirement. If that is what a woman chooses to do, that is a worthy and high calling. However, many of the women touting these views are doing so while convincing you to pay them to tell you this. They are making tons of money when you view their videos, buy their products, or listen to their podcasts. Clearly, they are women in business and not just stay at home mothers.
If there’s one thing I can encourage you on, you are so worth whatever God has called you to. If you’re called to be a judge - be the best judge. If you’re called to be a stay - at - home mother - be the best at it. Most importantly, be the best student of Jesus. Put prayer, Bible reading, and Godly community first. Whether male or female, put your own family’s wants and needs above everyone else’s (after Jesus, of course). And, don’t say crazy things like women shouldn’t vote or be judges. Support the brothers and sisters God put in your life and honor what God has called them to. Please don’t make up Biblical opinions that aren’t there too.
