What Does It Mean That God Is Omnipotent?
We serve a God who is omnipotent. Omnipotence is the quality of having unlimited or very great power. This means His power is unmatched - He created everything and everyone that previously existed and currently exists. This aspect of God's character is all over the pages of Scripture.
God speaks about His omnipotence in Isaiah 46:9-11:
"Remember the former things of old; for I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like me, declaring the end from the beginning and from ancient times things not yet done, saying, 'My counsel shall stand, and I will accomplish all my purpose,' calling a bird of prey from the east, the man of my counsel from a far country. I have spoken, and I will bring it to pass; I have purposed, and I will do it."
His explanation of His omnipotence basically tells us He is all-powerful and will accomplish His will through that power.
Another passage where God's omnipotence is on display is Psalm 33:10-11:
"The LORD brings the counsel of the nations to nothing; he frustrates the plans of the peoples. The counsel of the LORD stands forever, the plans of his heart to all generations."
His will overpowers all others' wills and plans. At first that can seem frustrating as Psalm 33:10 says, but at second glance, it's one of the most comforting aspects of God's character if you're one of His children. If you're following Him and in His will, you can know that no one and nothing can move you from that path! All we have to do to be in His will is obey what He's already told us in His word (also called His "general will"). His will isn't as mysterious as many Christians make it out to be.
For those who are suffering, God's omnipotence gives peace, because you can be confident and rest in the fact that He will keep His promises to never leave you or forsake you, to feed you and comfort you, to take care of you and fight for you, and so many more. He can keep those promises because of the fact that He is all-powerful! Nothing can keep Him from following through on every promise He has made to His children.
Rest today in His omnipotence.
