Shoba's Corner: What Are You Filled With?

Does my cup overflow?

As I fill my cup with tea or coffee, I often think of the verses in the Bible which tell me to be filled.

  • When we are filled with something there is no room for anything else.

  • What we are filled with overflows into the lives of those around us.

So what can we be filled with and what should we be filled with according to God’s Word?

In Psalm 16:11 David asks God to ‘fill him with joy in God’s presence’.

Other verses which talk of our hearts filling with joy are Psalm126:3 and Isaiah 60:5.

“The Lord has done great things for us and we are filled with joy.”-Psalm 126:3 NIV

“Then you will look and be radiant, your heart will throb and swell with joy.”-Isaiah 60:5 NIV

“Rooted and built in Him, strengthened, overflowing with thankfulness.”-Colossians 2:7 NIV

“Out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks.”-Luke 6:45b NIV

Our words indicate the condition of our heart.

Today, as you go about your day, watch your words. Are they kind, loving and thoughtful? Do they overflow with joy, peace and hope? Is your attitude showing the world that you overflow with thankfulness? What words come out when the day is stressful, after a busy day, a worrying diagnosis or when the kids are troublesome?

“You’ll smile, big smiles
Your heart will swell and yes, burst!”-Isaiah 60:5 MSG

Could you and I be described with these words?

Each time you fill your cup ask Jesus to fill you with joy, peace, hope and thanks.

This joy, peace, hope and thankfulness is from God- it does not depend on our circumstances or the way in which others treat us or how we feel.  It is God’s gift to us.

God has got these gifts ready for us but only obedience takes us to the room with the gifts.

Then we will be able to say with the Psalmist- my cup overflows.

“My cup overflows.”-Psalm 23:5b NIV

When we let go and empty our hands, God is there to fill our open hands.
