Book Review: More Than Your Number

For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you. Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when all the time there is a plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.” - Matt. 7:2-5

More Than Your Number is “A Christ - Centered Enneagram approach to becoming A.W.A.R.E of your internal world. Maybe you have heard of the enneagram? Maybe you are one of those people who has done every single personality test on the planet. Beth & Jeff McCord want to help people understand the enneagram from a Christ-centered approach.

Personally, I am still understanding the roots of the enneagram and it pointing to Christ. I am still researching, but have heard the enneagram is rooted in some ungodly practices like numerology. However, I do think it is important that “anything intended for harm can be used to glorify God” (Gen. 50:20). This is the approach I took as I reviewed the book.

Beth & Jeff do a great job of taking in this perspective as well. The first half of this book is about understanding yourself and how you are God’s beloved child. They describe that when you know your Creator and who He created you to be, then you can engage better with the people in your life. This is a proper perspective to have on everything in life. Don’t learn the enneagram and use it as a tool to excuse your behaviors.

Instead, utilize the free personality test that they have to use this book as a tool to understand how you can be better for others around you. If you are a type 2 like me, you may be the person who serves others all the time and forgets to focus on what you need to grow. How can you overcome that to make sure you stay in constant awareness of your Savior being the ultimate priority? There are tools in this book to help you with that.

If you are into personality tests, you will really like this book. It’s a great tool for your toolbox. If you are still discovering who God intended you to be, it’s also a great tool for your toolbox. Check it out for yourself and see what you think!
