God Can Clear Out Our Mess

“Do not let your adornment be merely outward—arranging the hair, wearing gold, or putting on fine apparel—rather let it be the hidden person of the heart, with the incorruptible beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is very precious in the sight of God.”

1 Peter 3:3-4

The other day, I accidentally dropped a small earring into my makeup and hair drawer while getting ready. I have to admit that this drawer is a bit of a mess, and finding things in there can be a challenge on a good day. So, there I was, rummaging around, trying to find this small earring I wanted to wear.

As I pushed lipsticks, makeup brushes, hair ties, and headbands out of the way, I realized that I was going to have to empty the whole drawer to find it. This small, beautiful thing got lost in the clutter of everything already in the drawer.

As I was pulling all the contents of the drawer and putting them on the dresser, I felt God speaking to me, reminding me of how much I need Him.

There are times when things that are good for me get lost in the messiness of life. I believe this is true for all of us. There will always be that one small thing that can mess up our day and cause ripple effects into every other part of our lives.

Moments of devotion and prayer can often be interrupted by thoughts and distractions, and tiny moments of beauty are overlooked when we do too much. This is why we need God to help us prioritize, recognize, and immerse ourselves in what is good and beneficial for us.

There are also times when I try to find what I want, but I can’t see it. I’m only rearranging things without clearing out the clutter. I again believe this is true of all of us. We may keep pushing aside things in life that are difficult to remove.

Meanwhile, what we genuinely need stays buried because we do not want to see the hidden parts of ourselves that feel disorderly, messy, or overwhelming. This is why we need God - only He can completely clear out the clutter, chaos, and confusion in our lives, renewing and purifying us with His grace and faithfulness.

More than anything else, Christ is the beautiful thing we need every day. Only with Him can we recognize the eternal beauty in the mundane. Only through His Spirit can we perceive our lives with a clear and focused view of His love, salvation, power, and holiness.

Think About It

Is there something in your life that keeps you from the fullness of God’s grace?

What is one beautiful thing you have received from the Lord?

Pray About It

Lord,

There are times during my day when I feel like I don’t have anything left to give because I am already weighed down and tired, my mind and heart cluttered with distractions and plans. Lord, please empty me of myself and fill me with Your presence so others can see the beauty of Your loving light in me.

Amen
