Love Does Not Boast

What is love and how do we know if it is lasting? I have asked myself this question throughout the course of my life. Time and time again, I have been reminded what lasting love looks like by looking in God's Word. In 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 NIV, I have been able to read, see, and feel what true love looks like. It isn’t just some reading that is popular at weddings and it isn’t just some nice sounding script that looks good on a Pinterest plaque. It is a description of who God is while also being a guidebook for how we are to love.

Spring Cleaning Your Heart

Spring has finally arrived, and it is time to spring clean our hearts. Springtime last year, COVID-19 brought a halt to our busy schedules and the world was forced to take a collective deep breath. We had no choice but to be still. It feels like the year has come and gone, and it has. Many of our projects lay half complete in our garages and our anxious hearts still lay in limbo. From lockdown to lockdown, second to third waves, we continually are given no choice but to face ourselves.

Celebrating Broken Sandcastles

We have a sandbox at school. My students like to make sand pies, dig to the bottom of the box, make tracks, build sandcastles. Everyday is a completely new adventure when it comes to the sandbox. The other day, I sat down by a tiny human (about three years old) who decided to build a sandcastle. He chose the perfect pail and perfect shovel. Then he sat down to begin his work. He meticulously shoveled sand into the pail until it was full. After a few tugs on the pail, he managed to turn it over into the sandbox to dump the sand out. As he pulled the pail up, I watched the sand topple down in a messy heap. I took a breath, prepared to reassure him that we could try again together. But he looked at me with the proudest smile you’ve ever seen, and giggled.

Practicing Repentance

“Break up your fallow ground” means to rend your heart, break down the barriers of your soul, and repent. I believe one of the hardest things to admit, especially for those “seasoned saints” or anyone who has walked with the Lord for any length of time, is our misunderstanding of repentance. I will admit that I once believed the word “repent” was directed only towards unbelievers or used only in the context of an altar call. Until recently, I never embraced the beauty that repentance brings to my relationship with Jesus.

We Are Worthy

"Does God love us no matter what?" I looked up over the rim of my glasses to see a small child standing in front of my desk. It was "free choice" time in our classroom, and while many of the students had chosen to engage in puzzles, games, and movement activities, a small group had elected to take the children's Bible off of our prayer table and sit quietly on the carpet, flipping through its pages.

Cross On A Necklace Or Cross You Cling To?

“Are you comfortable with just a cross on a necklace or do you want a cross you can cling to?” Let that sink in. I recently read Wreck My Life by Mo Isom (which I highly recommend) who asked this powerful question. So which one are you comfortable with? Do you use the Bible for inspirational quotes to post on social media or for God to speak to you through? Are you asking Jesus to only lavish you with blessings or to carry you when blessings are given and taken away?

In The Loneliness

I think the older you get, the more shame is attached to the words "I'm lonely." But I was. I felt like I was drowning. I felt like I was dying. Several years ago, I thought it would start to get better with a new year. At the time, I was starting two new jobs and was involved in multiple volunteer opportunities. I figured somewhere along the way I'd stop feeling lonely. But I didn't. And I started to wonder why.
