Overflowing Joy at Home

A new topic has taken over my heart this month, and that is home.

Home: A place where you feel loved and cared for, a place where you can be you. Whether or not this is your actual experience - to some it is a place of danger, or even abuse - we all carry a dream of home in our hearts.

My life is dramatically different from last year. Work and love are in flux. I live with my parents and brother, which is a blessing because they are not just family, but they are also some of my best friends. I know that one day I will miss being at home like this. I will miss my morning ‘wake up calls’ from Bear, our puppy.. I’ll miss my dad’s smart, funny comments. I’ll miss laughing with my brother and spending time with my mom. And when I do leave my house again, I’ll be carrying more than just their love and support; scripture promises that God also goes with me wherever I do. “I can never escape from your Spirit! I can never get away from your presence!” (Psalm 139:7 NLT).

Where we rest our heads may change, but we can be sure that our hearts are already in their true and permanent homes in Jesus. He is my companion as I walk into new homes. I love the word picture invoked by Psalm 139:5 in the English Standard Version: “You hem me in, behind and before, and lay your hand upon me.” If you aren’t familiar, the hem at the bottom of a garment is what holds it together. David is telling us that God holds all the pieces together. He is the master tailor and we are his creation. I take comfort in knowing that He has the perfect timing and purpose, and is not at all perplexed by our disappointment or questions.

Sometimes being back at home feels like a prison sentence, but then I recall James chapter 1. We are invited to ask for wisdom. Our weaknesses are not secret and our Father is not at all perplexed by our questions. “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him” (James 1:5).

And so, as I spend my days in this season caring for the house and the pets, I choose to believe that this season is paving the way for the next. I daydream about my next guy out there somewhere, and all the ways this godly man will treat me as his beloved wife (1 Peter 3:7). Each dish I wash suddenly becomes a shining part of my testimony and inspires joy. After all, God can be glorified in anything done with a righteous heart (1 Corinthians 10:31).

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Hey y’all! My name is Mary Hannah. I remember when I was little, all I wanted to be, a writer and now I am living my dream. It makes this small-town girl’s heart excited that y’all are reading what I write. I reside, in what I think is the best state in the south, Georgia; where sweet tea is an option at every restaurant and pecan pie is a necessity at any family gathering. I am just single gal, who is trying to find the path to love, but no matter how long I am waiting until love finds me; I’ll still be praising God. I love Jesus with my whole heart; I write to spread his name and fame throughout the earth. Some fun facts about me: I’ve crossed the Boston Marathon finish line I love the smell of cut wood (it takes me back to my childhood) I’m down for a cup of coffee no matter the time I prefer dark chocolate over milk I would rather deal with cockroaches and/or spiders than ANTS! If you want to read more of my words check out my blog: tbdmlp.wordpress.com I’ll leave the cockroach talk out!!
