Shoba's Corner: Wardrobe Basics

We all have our favorite clothes, right?  The ones we can’t live without. Over the years my wardrobe has taken on a very new look. For the 56-year-old Grandma in me, I like the clothes I have now. Muted shades, mostly ¾ sleeves and easy to maintain.

As I was tidying up my wardrobe and giving it a ‘use it or toss it’ clean, I was reminded of the many verses in the Bible which talk about clothes and being clothed.

I quickly sketched a rough outline of a dress and wrote down the references inside it.

According to the Bible, what are the clothes which should be a part of our wardrobe?

“Clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ.”-Romans 13:14a NIV

If we did this, everybody would see Jesus when they looked at us!

“A woman should dress herself with good deeds.”-1 Timothy 2:10a NIV, paraphrased

She is clothed with strength and dignity.

She can laugh at the days to come.”-Proverbs 31:25 NIV

“Clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.”-Colossians 3:12b NIV

You may want to find the dictionary meaning of the words - strength, dignity, compassions, kindness, humility, gentleness and peace.

Could you draw an outline of a dress and write these words inside?

Where could you put it up to remind you to wear these before you start your day?

You may want to find the Bible references for the clothing mentioned in the poem below.

(the highlighted words!)

I look in the mirror each morning and say

Am I clothed and ready to face today?

Good deeds and Jesus have  I worn?

Does humility richly me adorn?

Have I sprayed on love, lots and lots of it?

A quiet gentle spirit, does it perfectly fit?

Strength and dignity, I can’t overlook-

They keep me covered like the cover of a book.

Compassion. Kindness, gentleness sure

Rub in patience, salvation, righteousness pure

Others see my clothes, the colors, fabric, design

But my protection is divine, deep inside.
