How One "Awkward" Moment Could Change a Life

We go day to day passing by so many people. Some we smile at and they smile back, while others just look down and keep walking on by. What we do next in these moments is the most important thing we can do. Instead of thinking “Gee, what’s their deal?” or “Wow, she’s far too smiley,” we need to do something. We need to start reaching out. One of the biggest fears we have in sharing Christ’s love to strangers is it being too “awkward.” If standing out or being different means witnessing the gospel come to life, why not?

To the person who looked down and kept walking by, maybe they need your kind words. We don’t know what they may be going through. To the girl who smiled back, what an opportunity! Maybe she will be receptive of a conversation starter. Maybe she will draw back and become a little more shy. Could your smile, your words, your hand reached out save a life?

Maybe, what we are afraid of will actually happen. It will be too awkward and we will “ruin” our chance. But, friend, when our heart is in the right place, when our motive is furthering God’s kingdom, there is no ruined chance. Even if someone doesn’t accept Christ during your conversation (or lack thereof sometimes) doesn’t mean that you didn’t just plant a seed, or watered one, or helped pick a few dead leaves from a scar they had from being hurt by a fellow brother or sister in Christ. All done simply by you being friendly.

He who plants and he who waters are one, and each will receive his wages according to his labor. For we are God’s fellow workers. You are God’s field, God’s building. -1 Corinthians 3:8-9 EV

But maybe, just maybe, this could be the day, the conversation that you brought Light into another person’s world. You surrendered to that feeling you were having, being pulled to this person. Their story is similar to yours or a loved one. Your scars and past hurts could open their eyes and heart to what you have to say. Some of the things you are most ashamed of could be the thing that brings them to the Father. For we know He is the Master of timing, the Master of using one’s life to save another. Ultimately, His Son’s life is what saved us all.

“And now, just as you accepted Christ Jesus as your Lord, you must continue to follow him. Let your roots grow down into Him, and let your lives be built on Him. Then your faith will grow strong in the truth you were taught, and you will overflow with thankfulness.”  -Colossians 2:6-7 NLT

I too struggle with this too though. What if rejection happens every single time I try to open up a conversation? However, if there is one thing I have learned is that God is so good at taking my faults and my worries and showing me how big and powerful He can be through me. All it takes is my surrender and my acceptance that if someone doesn’t want to talk about it, I at least know who I can be praying for.

So, is one awkward moment too high of a price to pay to potentially lead someone to Christ? It could be through a conversation or through your prayers for someone. Just don’t cave to the weight of the fear that you may be feeling, if you’re feeling something do something. We are the voice, the feet and the hands of Jesus Christ. Let’s live that out every day of our lives.

“And He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature.” -Mark 16:15 NKJV
