Desperation For God
There are two types of desperation that you will face in your life.
The first kind of desperation is to feed your own insecurities. This is when you throw yourself at the first guy that pays attention to you because you think he’s all you’ll ever get. This kind of desperation is a lack of faith that will cause you to justify your reasoning and make decisions that can affect you for the rest of your life: from friendships, finances, marriage, kids, and most importantly… your relationship with Christ. This kind of desperation will cause you to give up your dreams and the calling God has placed on your life. You will think it won’t, but it will.
A person may think their own ways are right, but the Lord weighs the heart. Proverbs 21:2
The second kind of desperation is when your security is in Christ, when you have a strong desire for God to move on behalf of your life because you know He’s all you’ll ever need. You can completely trust Him with your friends, finances, marriage, and your relationship with Him. You can trust and know that He always has the best intentions for your life (Jeremiah 29:11) . This kind of desperation will keep you following hard after Christ and pursuing the calling He has on your life.
When you can see the two forms of desperation clearly written out before your eyes, it makes it so easy to see the differences between the two. Don’t you wish it was that clear to see all of the time? It can be when you keep your focus on Christ instead of being blinded by your insecurities.
Desperation can make you do crazy, radical things. And it’s going to reveal the heart of your desperate soul and what it’s longing for: a quick fix full of lifelong consequences that will detour you on paths you never intended to journey, or a well mapped out road with a Heavenly destination in mind.
In this life, you get to decide which road of desperation you will follow. But choose wisely.
Friend, I want to encourage you, be so desperate for Christ that nothing else matters! Because when you’re desperate for Him, everything else falls into place. I promise you that. Did I say perfectly? Nope. Because nothing on this side of Heaven is perfect. But God will use even the imperfect things for your good. Romans 8:28 reminds us of this: “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to His purpose.”
Maybe this very second, your life has taken a detour and you don’t like the direction you’re headed. You can’t do it alone like you have been. But with Christ’s help, you can turn it all around.
In all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight. Proverbs 3:6
It doesn’t get any clearer than that. Now is not the time to be desperate for anything but Him. Don’t waste another second more than you need to in making a decision to allow Him to set the course for your life. Matthew 16:25-26 says, “For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it. What good will it be for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul?”
A Prayer
Jesus, I’ve let desperation for the quick fixes of this world satisfy me, but the truth is, I want nothing more than what you want for my life. Forgive me for chasing after anything less than your highest. Let my heart be desperate for nothing but you. In Jesus name, amen!
What are you desperate for right now?
